Sara Hughes Gilbert graduated as the valedictorian of the Millersville State Normal School Class of 1887. Ultimately, Gilbert earned every degree that Millersville State Normal School offered. Her talent resulted in what became a 40 year career as a member of Millersville’s faculty. She taught math, literature, and the written and spoken word. She became an authority on English grammar on campus. She also served her alma mater as the secretary of the forerunner of the Millersville University Alumni Association. She was an active member of the National Educational Association. Lehigh Hall was formerly named Gilbert Hall, after Sara Gilbert, and now the south wing of the West Village is named in Sara Gilbert’s namesake as well.
