Marianna Gibbons
Mariana Gibbons was involved in the Underground Railroad; her family home serving as a station. As a student at Millersville, Gibbons completed a thesis entitled “The Education of Woman.” Gibbons also served as historian of her graduating class, writing The Class of 1870: A History. She was a writer for The Philadelphia Press and became a well-known lecturer and an avid traveler of Europe. She spoke against Reconstruction and women’s suffrage saying “There are too many ignorant and irresponsible voters now and nothing should be done to add to that number.”
